At next week's Mayor's Question Time, the first since Johnson's re-election, the Mayor will also be asked by Green and Liberal Democrat AMs to detail the action he’s taken to implement the London Cycling Campaign’s calls for a new approach to planning roads which makes cycle use and safety the highest priority.

During the election Mr Johnson signed up to the LCC’s ‘Love London, Go Dutch’ campaign.

Here's an article from the BBC asking would our roads be better without traffic lights? The article is written from a drivers perspective but how do you think it would affect safe cycling?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-18072259

Viewpoint: Could we do without traffic lights?
www.bbc.co.uk
We rely on traffic lights to tell us when to go. And when to stop. We should replace that with common sense, argues traffic campaigner Martin Cassini.

Boris Johnson - His first 100 days. Will he stick to his promises?

LCC will monitor the Mayor's first 100 days in office and deliver a verdict on his cycling commitments after that time.

In the days before the election, Johnson promised to deliver the three Love London, Go Dutch commitments during his first mayoral term:
1) Create three flagship Love London, Go Dutch developments on major streets or locations;
2) Ensure all planned developments on main roads under his control are completed to Love London, Go Dutch standards, especially junctions;
3) Complete the Cycle Superhighways to Love London, Go Dutch standards.

LCC's Chief Executive Ashok "The first 100 days of the new mayor’s term will be the most important because this is when he will make important appointments, set out new policies and allocate budgets.

"We'll also be asking our supporters where they want the Mayor to deliver the flagship walking and cycling projects that he has committed to building."

Mayor's speech to City Hall this morning - selected excerpt below that mentions cycling

http://www.london.gov.uk/who-runs-london/mayor/city-hall-speech-may-2012

"We will continue to improve the environment and the quality of life because a city that is clean and green and full of bikes is more likely to attract investment.

In making the case to government for London I will point out that a strong London economy is the key to growth in the country as a whole and it is essential that we frame and focus the vision for the city.

So I am now asking you all to help me produce a 2020 vision for the city, encompassing everything from spatial and transport developments, opportunity areas and river crossings to air quality, cycling and health outcomes. Of course this should include projects that will not only be complete by 2020 but which must be underway.

The need is urgent because the population is growing and we can so easily slip behind, we must not repeat the mistakes of the 50s 60s and 70s. One thing that the Crossrail argument has taught me is that if we can build a consensus around the future, then we are much more likely to make it happen and to help us all see what is happening and what we are doing right and wrong.

We are going to be much more pro-active about statistics. I want this building (City Hall) somewhere to contain a physical resource where we can see – and members of the public can see what is happening on gun crime or affordable home starts or educational outcomes or air quality and we can use that clarity to drive performance.

One thing the last four years has taught me is that four years is a very short time. The elections have slowed us all down so now is the time to put the pedal to the metal."

Thu, 10/05/2012 - 12:48pm
A big CONGRATS to the 28 cycling projects which have been allocated a total of £132,154 through the Community Cycling Fund for London (CCFL). The annual fund, provided by TFL and administered by LCC, aims to kick-start cycling projects across London communities which will have a lasting impact.

Among others, this years funding will be used to provide cycling and maintenance training to vulnerable people from Riverside Housing Association in Brent, cycling events to staff, children and parents at Grazebrook Primary School in Hackney, new trikes for an all-ability cycling club in Lewisham and cargo bikes for transporting tools and trees between project sites of the London Orchard Project.

We look forward to working with you all

Hmmmm. For the bicycle to “dominate” or to become a serious part of the transport mix, TfL needs to change the road user hierarchy, to something like that adopted by boroughs such as Camden (pedestrians>cyclists>buses>commercial vehicles>motorcycles>private cars) and away from the self-selecting hi...

Good to see us get a brief mention on the back page of The Guardian newspaper's cycling supplement today ... and a thank you in the 'flannel panel' too (for giving them some useful nuggets of advice).

It's a good-looking supplement, with lots of routes for all the family to try out. If you miss today's paper, there's a second part in the Observer tomorrow.
